Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (September, 1980)

My favorite Dr. Seuss book
..I won't write pages retelling the whole book. I just want to tell you that this is my favorite Dr. Seuss book and I have a copy that I received as a gift when I was 7 years old. My copy is over 30 years old and I have taken it in twice to read to my children's classes. My four kids love this book and their classes loved it too. A great book - buy it for your child and I'll bet that they will have the book 30 years from now and will be reading it to their kids!

Get Stuffed! Fish and Guests Smell in Three Days!
Thidwick's adventure begins simply enough. He is marching along on the shores of Lake Winna-Bango, on the far northern shore, looking for moose-moss to eat with 60 other moose. A small Bingle Bug nicely asks Thidwick for a ride "for a way." Thickwick replies, "I'm happy to share!" Most of us would have said the same.

But what happens when a guest overstays her or his welcome? In Thidwick's case, his horns become a veritable zoo of wildlife. There is a Tree-Spider spinning a web, a Zinn-a-zu Bird who gets married and builds a nest, and their uncle the woodpecker who pecks holes the squirrel family inhabits. And so on it goes, to include a bobcat, turtle, fox, mice, fleas, a big bear . . . and 362 bees!

Thidwick is like the horse in Animal Farm. He's providing all of the work and benefit, and everyone is bossing him around. Why, they won't even agree to let him leave with the other moose to find more moose moss. Why is Thidwick willing to put up with this? What are the benefits of having a big heart in this situation?

How does Thidwick end up in this mess? Well, having accepted the Bingle Bug, the subsequent guests ignore Thidwick and ask the earlier guests instead if they can move in. Thidwick honors his first commitment, extends it in time and to the new inhabitants.

As a result of Thidwick's dilemma, this book provides a good opportunity to discuss sharing with your child . . . and explain the benefits and limits of sharing.

Your child will run into people who will try to take advantage. This gives you a chance to ask your child what he or she would do in Thidwick's situation.

The story's resolution is a most original and humorous one that makes good use of the mental picture of shedding your onorous burdens.

This story is illustrated by Dr. Seuss, as well as written in his best rhyming way. The drawings of the creatures in Thidwick's horns come close to matching many of Dr. Seuss's most imaginative mechanical devices. The horns of this dilemma are funnier than those devices, because this concoction is based on animals and natural processes.

The story is a pretty easy one for five to six year olds to learn to read, because many of the words are short and rhyme. The illustrations also "name" many of the nouns. The humor provides "hooks" for memorizing the words.

I also liked the idea of introducing children to the concept of treating a guest well, even if the guest does not behave well. Our society would be much improved if we all did a little more friendly hosting.

After you finish enjoying this story, ask your child if she or he knows of anyone who is like Thidwick. Ask your child what that person should do differently.

Enjoy having a big heart . . . and hosting others!

One of two of my favorite Seuss's
I remember this book from growing up 30 years ago. The story of a overly gracious moose and how some of his woodland 'friend' take advantage of him. It is classic Seuss with wonderful rhyme and wording. This and McElligot's Pool are now staples for our children's bedtime reading.

It is a childrens book but atleast 10 of my adult friends have their own copy.

Great book for beginning readers
"Morris the Moose Goes to School" is a fun story that kids enjoy reading and listening to. I remembered reading and loving the book from when I was a child, so I bought the book for my own children. It has been a great book to use in teaching them how to read, because it holds their interest, they want to read it because it is funny. "

Morris- Great Children's Book
This is an excellent book for children to read. Before I started Kindergarten 15 yrs. ago(I'm 20 now), my sister taught me to read this book. She was 7 yrs old and thus was attending school and I wanted to learn to read. This book, taught me a little about ABC's, counting, and what it was like to attend school...except for the moose being there of course! I remember Morris trying to hide but his antlers kept sticking out.LOL! When I finally started Kindergarten, myself and a fellow classmate Becky were the only two students capable of reading large words and regular books. I believe that this was because of the foundation layed out by this book... it made reading fun.I recommend this book and would actually like to get my hands on it if I could!

Great Moose book
Morris the moose goes to school is a great book. At first Morris does not know what the teacher is talking about because he never went to school. But then he goes to school and learns how to read and count. He isn't very smart at the first part of the book, but by the end of the book he is much smarter. He loves going to school! Morris learns a lot and YOU will LEARN alot too. I take this book in the car when we go places. I like this book because I can read it by myself. YOU will LEARN alot about Morris if you choose this book.

Love this book, and I didn't even attend Notre Dame
This is an absolutely wonderful accounting of a man who had a vision of the proper place of athletics in American life. By the end, I had a tear in my eye, even though I have no direct connection to ND.

Inspirational
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. While Moose Krause isn't the most recognizable figure in Notre Dame sports history, his story certainly makes him one of the most interesting. Congrats to Mr. Kelly for his enthusiastic, page-turning masterpiece!

we can all learn from this book
as a teacher, i will encourage all my students to read this book. through this marvelous book, i began to appreciate the character of this man called "moose." aside from being a fine athlete and coach, kraus lived his life the way to which we should all aspire. whether or not you're a notre dame fan, this is a great read.

Mooseltoe

Authors: Margie Palatini and Henry Cole

Oh Christmas Moose, Oh Christmas Moose!
Escape the frantic pace of the holidays by sitting down with your child and reading about it in this book. Margie Palatini's wild, rhyming writing style will keep kids entertained. They may recognize their parents' yuletide behaviour in Moose's manic preparations -- and his inevitable forgetting of a key Christmas element. The moral of the story is a tribute to those who will do anything to make everything just right.

Children will beg to hear "Mooseltoe" again and again!
What an amazing Christmas book! If there was only one Christmas book I could recommend to you, it would be this hilarious book. The 2nd class that I read this book to was laughing the whole time and joined in when it was time to say "perfectly perfect". As a teacher, you know that your students love a book when they can join along and read parts of the story with you. I love reading this book and I know you will as well. I agree with the other reviews, this book is very well written. But let's not forget about the terrific illustrations that will spark the children's interests. This will be a holiday story that will humor hearts of all ages.

A Book Full of Holiday Cheer
Mr Moose is back with his amazing and unrivaled handlebar "moosetache" to help us get ready for the holidays. He wants Christmas to be "perfectly perfect" for his family and so he's armed with his checklist to make getting ready easy and simple. First he writes and addresses all his cards, check. Then he shops 'til he drops, check. Then he wraps and ribbons, bakes and cooks and even roasts the chestnuts, check check check. And on and on, decorating and singing and checking off his list. On the night before Christmas he hangs the stockings, just so and calls his family in to see that everything is "perfectly perfect". But his kids notice a BIG problem...he forgot the Christmas tree. Off Mr Moose goes in search of a tree, any tree, but he's out of luck. There just aren't any trees left. As he comes home empty handed, he has a very clever idea to solve his problem and before you know it Mr Moose and his moosetache are decorated and standing in the corner, waiting for Santa. Margie Palatini has written an imaginative, amusing story that will charm and delight youngsters from 3-7. Her rhyming text and Henry Cole's bold, colorful and very expressive illustrations will have your little ones giggling, as they enjoy watching Mr Moose get ready for Christmas. This is a picture book filled with holiday joy and cheer and a wonderful addition to your home library.

Of Moose and Miracles

Of Moose and Miracles
This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read! I laughed and cried with the Frick family. Everyone, no matter your denomination or degree of faith, feels the true presence of God in their lives when they read this book. I can't wait to read it again!

Of Moose and Miracles
This story is one of sorrows, hopes, and many graces. It a testament to one family's faith as they face the loss of their youngest member. It is a beautiful story of a faith community growing ever larger coming together with prayers, faith and love.

It a story of many graces and miracles.

A child shall lead.
Life has a randomness that contains both good and bad elements, and the story of the Frick family embodies both. The bad for this family is the tragedy that befalls their youngest son Kraig, a vibrant independent child, who finds himself afflicted with an inoperable brain stem tumor. The good is the strong belief the family has in their faith and how this helps them deal with this unthinkable event.

The presence that Kraig has in his short life upon the people who come to know him is incredible. And, in his death, this presence is carried on through a Franciscan priest who gains courage and strength through Kraig to accomplish things beyond his own limits.

This is a story of courage, joy and adherence to belief that will stir readers' emotions, and help them deal with their own obstacles in life. Steeped in religion, the story is told in a very comfortable manner by author Marion Lee. She has a way with words that allows readers to believe they are sitting across from Karyl Frick as she tells the story of her son.

Lee brings to life the events surrounding this family in such a way that the reader lives along with the joys and sadness of this spectacular family.

Let us hope that we don't have to wait another twelve years to be show another story from this excellent author.

Chocolate Moose for Dinner
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (September, 1987)
Author: Fred Gwynne
Average review score:

Great Book For All Ages
"A Chocolate Moose for Dinner" is a great book that shows people of all ages, how the English language isn't always literal. Not only is this book funny, but also has great illustrations!

He's the Town's Favorite Sun.
The English language is all [messed] up. Foreigners recognize that immediately, but it takes we Americans much longer to realize that. Of course, with all the goofy rules and exceptions in English, it can be quite fun to speak it. No more is this more apparent than with homonyms (words that sound the same but have different meanings). Kids love homonyms, and used in an imaginative context can help children gain an appreciation for language. With that in mind, A CHOCOLATE MOOSE FOR DINNER is a delightful book. The sayings and the illustrations that accompany those phrases are a joy to read and usually get several laughs from children. A few of the phrases (shoe tree, and the rowing allusions) maybe a bit unfamiliar to modern audiences. Nevertheless, those terms add to the book rather than detract. Children love this book and it is sure to be a winner in alomst any home.

Homonymic Humor
Fred Gwynne wrote his books for the persons who like to hear words in strange context and see strange intrepretations. Elementary children love to have the Gwynne books and hear the adults read these phrases to them with delightful illustrations that don't say what we have expected to see and hear. Obviously chocolate moose should be spelled mousse and thus we see a real moose being served for dinner. Fred in real life was as diverse as his books with his role in Adams Family. As an adult and teacher, I love these books and think about words that are spelled in several ways.

Mooses Come Walking
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (October, 1995)
Authors: Arlo Guthrie and Alice May Brock
Average review score:

Does it get any better?
Mooses Come Walking is such a fun book. It is a perfect bedtime story for young children because the pages are very colorful and the illustrations are very striking. Kids will be engrossed by the pictures, and the cute story is a fun little lullaby.

When Arlo Comes Talking It's Always A Thrill
...Mooses Come Walking by Arlo Guthrie and illustrated by Alice M. Brock is one of those cool children's poems that sticks in your mind and can be recited over and over again without losing the good feeling it gives your head and your mouth. It is less forced than most of the Dr.Seuss poetry. And besides being a silly piece of Arlo poetry, the short, simple story has a message: be honored if wild animals come to see you and you get to see them. When you need a short, fun, bedtime or anytime book, read this one to your kids.

mooses!
This book is an amusing little look into the night life of the wild animals in Massachusetts as seen through the eyes of folk singer, Arlo Guthrie. I've heard him tell the story live at some of his concerts and was pleasantly surprised when I found the story in print, especially when I discovered that the illustrations for the book were done by alice of the famous song "alice's resturant". The book is great for a bedtime story for little kids, but also serves as amusment for adults.

Blue Moose

Authors: Manus Pinkwater and Daniel Manus Pinkwater
Average review score:

My favorite book of all time!
Blue Moose is an excellent short book for kids to learn on. I first read it at the age of 12, when I was reading quite well, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I haven't met any other Blue Moose fans other than my friends and myself, and that disappoints me.This book should definitely be reprinted. I am not a tame moose!!!

A must read book!
THIS BOOK MUST BE REPRITED! I remember having a teacher read this book to my class and it was really funny. Who would ever dream up about a blue moose who does the things that he does except Pinkwater. We need more books like this one! I would love to have a copy of this book and of THE BLUE MOOSE RETURNS. Everyone should read this book.

My favorite!
Someone before mentioned the line "I AM NOT A TAME MOOSE!" I, too, am prone to saying that--it's got to be my favorite line. My mom read this story to me many, many, many times when I was little. Now I'm 19, and I still make her read it to me. Everybody should read this book!
